Bead age unknown. Weathering from exposure to elements or skin contact may be present. Dzi made their appearance in 1000 BC, in ancient Tibet: brought back by Tibetan soldiers from Persia. Dzis were crafted using agate as the base stone & then fabricated with lines & circles using unique ancient methods. Fear of the evil eye was taken seriously by the people, so they created talismans with eyes on them as a fight fire with fire form of protection. Shepherds & farmers pick them up in the grasslands & cultivating fields. Because dzi are found in the earth, Tibetans cannot conceive of them as man-made. One reason the beads are found near the surface in places such as freshly tilled fields, is because ancient monks were burned in funeral pyres wearing the beads, & long after the remains were gone, beads remained, & were found later. In Tibetan culture they attract protector deities. Dzi are prized as protective amulets & sometimes ground up into a powder & used in traditional Tibetan medicine. Beads subject to this process have small dig marks where a portion of the bead has been scraped or shaved away to be ground into the medicine. The Tibetan physician focuses his attention on spiritual factors in the treatment of the simplest illnesses. Every Tibetan physician vows to regard medicine as an offering to the Medicine Buddha & all other medicine deities & considers his medical instruments as holy objects. Before & after ingredients in the pills have been assembled, the physician imagines himself & the medicine to be Hayagriva, a Buddhist deity. The physician & deity are consolidated as 1 inseparable entity. The medicines are further blessed into a magnificent state through being implanted with mantra a prayerful vocalization. Because pills are blessed this way, Tibetans believe the dying can benefit. Medicine has metaphorical ability to remove poisons on the physical as well as spiritual plane. Healing takes place when the offering desires to purify a specific poison.
